korg ddm-110 digital drum machine

created in the summer of 2005, this unit includes eight additional controls, five of which have dual functions. with all controls unset the unit behaves as normal. the additional controls are layed out in two rows. the top row alters the currently playing drum pattern. the bottom row alters drum sounds.

TOP ROW CONTROLS

TOGGLE ONE: three position switch with centre posiion off. up position mutes half the kit. down position mutes the other half.

TOGGLE TWO: three position switch with centre posiion off. up position adds a two hit fast delay to all drums. down position adds a single hit slow delay to all drums. the relative time of delayed sounds is tied to the tempo so with careful programming may be used to add different effects from slow double hits to tight flams.

BUTTON ONE: hold down to temporarily alter drum pattern, in *some* way.

BUTTON TWO: hold down to temporarily alter drum pattern, in a *different* way. buttons one and two may be held down together for a third temporary pattern alteration.

BOTTOM ROW CONTROLS

TOGGLE THREE: three position switch with centre position off. up position introduces heavy, nasty distortion. down position introduces light distortion. the amount of each type of distortion is controlled by the hi-hat/cymbal volume control.

TOGGLE FOUR: three position switch with centre posiion off. up position raises the pitch of all drums. down position lowers the pitch of all drums. this does not affect the tempo of the drum pattern, just the speed at which individual drum samples are played.

BUTTON THREE: press to drastically raise pitch of all drums. use in conjunction with toggle four for different effects.

BODY CONTACT: a light touch lowers the pitch a variable amount (depending on how light). a heavy touch mutes all drums.

TEMPO CONTROL

a final bend was added that allows the tempo of patterns to be increased to really fast rates. i mean, really, really (really) fast!

this unit was created for roland of instylus.

the following recordings were created without any additional effects. each one was recorded by setting a single four beat bar going and playing with the additional controls live.
